Why

Within a generation, fully autonomous machines will be as ordinary as software is today: robotic arms, autonomous vehicles, and humanoids.

It is one of the largest shifts in how people live and work that any of us will witness, and it is already underway. Unlike software, these machines carry mass and force, and they operate in the same space as humans. When they are wrong, someone gets seriously injured.

The market is expanding aggressively. Goldman Sachs projects the humanoid market alone at $38 billion by 2035, and Morgan Stanley puts it at $5 trillion by 2050. Venture capital is rushing to match, with robotics startups posting their biggest year since 2021. Capital at that scale makes breakthroughs close to inevitable, the technology will arrive whether or not we are ready.

The open question is whether it arrives safely. Our safety frameworks were built for systems behind screens and cages, not physical ones that learn, move, and decide among us. Whether physical AI is among the best things to happen to humanity or the most dangerous depends on the nature of the relationship between autonomous machines and humans: safety.
